Bumblefoot (ulcerative pododermatitis)

This is a bacterial infection of the heel. It is largely a genetic condition but can be aggravated by environment. If you should have a rat with bumblefoot, you will want to cover any wire floors and keep their cage extremely clean.

Recommended treatment:
There are several treatments. Some work better than others for individual rats. You will want to try a couple of these for a week or so and see if there is any improvement. If you find one that works, stick with it.

1. Blu-Kote

2. Apply Betadine several times each day.

3. Clean the bumbles several times every day with Chlorhexiderm Flush.

4. Apply DILUTED Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) directly to the bumbles several times each day.

5. Apply DILUTED tea tree oil to the bumbles several times each day.

6. Give Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) orally. Use 1 drop per 10 pounds of rat. Mix as 1 drop GSE for 9 drops fruit juice in a dropper bottle. Store in refrigerator.
