Fancy Rat FAQs
What should I feed my rats?
I prefer to feed my rats Nutro Natural
Choice LITE dog food. Lab blocks are also acceptable, but my rats prefer the Nutro and the protein and fat content of Nutro is actually better suited to pet
rats. Another option is the Sue Bee diet, which also includes the Nutro.
What I Feed My Rats ("The Sue Bee Diet")

You should have one of these available
in their cage at all times. You should also limit the amount of high protein, high fat treats that you feed them. I supplement their diet every day with fruits
and vegetables. Some of my rats' favorites are peas, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, yams, blueberries, apples, bananas, raspberries, and melon. I also give my
rats yogurt (with live active cultures) every day to promote their healthy bacteria. I also occasionally feed them canned oysters, crabmeat, or baby shrimp.
Every evening, I give my rats a selection of fruits and vegetables, yogurt, and Debbie Ducommuns Molasses Mix. Her mix includes chromium picolinate, which has
been proven to help them stay healthy and live longer. I make my mix without the molasses otherwise my rats will not eat it. They love it without the molasses.
The recipe for Molasses Mix can be found in Debbie's book, Rat Health Care. Every rat owner should have this book. It is jam packed with ACCURATE information
on our furry little friends. The recipe for Molasses Mix can be found on page 4 in the 7th edition, which is the most recent. At only US$5.00 plus
US$1.50 shipping, this book will pay for itself the first time that you use it and save yourself a trip to the vet.
